A look back at the week that was in Burlington High School athletics.

This past week marked the end of the season for the last of the winter teams as both the boys’ hockey and basketball teams were eliminated from tournament play.

Boys Basketball

The Red Devils basketball team entered the MIAA state tournament as the 12th seeded team, and went on a good run winning two games and making it all the way to the North semi-finals. They kicked off their run by knocking off the defending North Brackett champs in Salem High School.

Their magical run came to an abrupt end, however, as they met a strong With a strong core returning next season, however, the Red Devils figure to once again be in contention for the state title.

Boys Hockey

On the ice, the Red Devils’ boys’ hockey team met the same fate as the BHS basketball team when they met a state powerhouse and had their post-season hopes dashed.

After starting the tournament with a strong showing against Andover with a 3-1 win, Burlington moved on to the quarterfinals where they faced a big challenge. The Red Devils were faced with a match-up with the number one seed in St. Mary’s of Lynn, a team that just missed out on a birth in the Super 8 Tournament.

The Red Devils started strong, getting off to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Brian Hood and Dan McMahon. They could not hold off the Spartans, however, who made a strong surge late in the second period, scoring three goals in under two minutes to take a 3-2 lead.
