Around the Burlington High School Sports World

A look back at the week that was in Burlington High School athletics.

I’m back to keep you updated on all of the weekly happenings in the world of sports! We’re just about at the halfway point of the 2011 high school spring season as many of the Red Devils squads battle for post-season births. Let’s take a look back at some of the results from this past week.

Tennis

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams were in action this past week, taking on the Melrose High School boys’ and girls’ squads. Both Red Devils teams were able to secure 4-1 victories over Melrose and keep their respective spots among the tops of the Middlesex League. The boys moved to 9-3 with the win while the girls moved to 10-2.

The boys’ team was paced by a strong performance from their number one singles player, Raghav Tanna, who made quick work of his opponent in winning 6-0, 6-1. For the Lady Devils, the got wins from their first and second singles players to fuel them. Caitlin Gianiano won 6-1, 6-3 at one singles while Emma McGowen won 7-5, 6-1 at two.

Baseball

The Burlington High School baseball team went 1-1 on the week with games against two Middlesex League opponents. They kicked things off against the class of the league in Lexington High School, and fell victim to the hottest team in the league as the Minutemen got the 6-2 decision to move to 10-0 on the season. The Red Devils bounced back nicely, though, with a 7-1 win over Melrose Thursday afternoon. Joe Yeadon paced BHS against Melrose pitching seven inning of one-hit ball while contributing three hits of his own from the plate.

Softball

The Burlington High School softball team won an exciting game over Lexington Monday in extra innings, taking the 3-2 decision. The Lady Devils were able to secure the win when Haley Currie stole third in the top of the eighth, and then took home on the ensuing throwing error.
