A look back at the week that was in Burlington athletics

With the weeklong holiday break looming, the winter sports teams had a packed week as the season continued to roll along. Lets take a look back at some of the results from the Red Devils last week.
Boys Hockey
The Red Devils finished up their three-game season opening road trip Wednesday night as they headed into Reading for a date with the Rockets. The result was a heart breaker for as they watched the home team score with just nine seconds left in the game to break a tie and steal a 2-1 win.

The Burlington boys' basketball team went 1-1 last week. They lost a close one on the road in Reading Tuesday night, by a final score 75-71. "It was a really great high school basketball game, and it literally came down to the last seconds as we had a chance to tie it with three seconds left but we turned the ball over," said head coach Tom Lyons. The Red Devils got strong contributions from a number of different players on the night. Zack Hurynowicz led Burlington in scoring with 24 points. Greg Sheridan had 17 points and Ryan Putney chipped in with 13.
The boys bounced back when they hosted Stoneham Thursday night, though, with a convincing 65-34 win over the Spartans. Coach Lyons was able to get all 15 of the players on his roster into the game, and 14 of them chipped in with some points. Seniors David Whitney and Steven Xu saw some solid minutes and each scored as they recorded four and two points respectively. The Red Devils will take part in the Wilmington Christmas Tournament this week.
Boys Indoor Track
The boys' track team took on Reading Memorial High School Tuesday night and was able to sneak away with a 43.5-42.5 victory. With only a handful of first place finishes, the Red Devils had to rely on a number of top three finishes to gain the points advantage. A sweep in the shot-put with Joe Hoffman taking first, Anuj Patel finishing second and Steve Healy finishing third, and a second and third place finish in the 55-meter dash clinched the win for BHS. Also to note, Bobby Bonetti won a jump-off to take first in the high jump and David Toronto won the one-mile race.
Girls Indoor Track
The Burlington Girl's Varsity Track Team won a very close meet last Wednesday night vs Stoneham. In the running events, Jen Hamvas won the 2-mile and Jaclyn Jensen won the 1000m in the last lap of their events. Jen Reilly cruised to another victory in the 1 mile. In the field events, Kierstin Merlino won the high jump and Ashley Steadman won the shot put. With the meet on the line, Burlington's team of one junior, one sophomore and one freshman Devon Doherty, Elizabeth Burkhart and Kaitlyn Gilberg swept the 55m dash, respectively, to help win the meet by a score of 46-40 and bring their season's record to 5-0.
