Around the Burlington High School sports world
A look back at the week that was in Burlington High School athletics.
Once again Mother Nature has done her best to put the winter sports teams on ice with yet another bad snow storm this past week. The Red Devils took the postponements in stride as they have been all winter, though, and the teams that were able to get their games in competed hard. Let’s take a look back at some of the results.
Wrestling
The Burlington High School wrestling squad headed north on I-93 last weekend to compete at the Capital City Classic in Concord, New Hampshire. Despite an extremely competitive field of wrestlers from both New Hampshire and Massachusetts, a few Red Devils were able to succeed and finish near the tops of their respective weight classes. Luke Nigro wrestled strong and placed third for the 152-pound weight class, and Steve Gianpapa was able to take fourth place in the 103-pound weight class.

Indoor Track
Last weekend was a big weekend for the Massachusetts indoor track world as runners from across the state flocked to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston for the State Coaches Invitational. Both the Burlington High boys’ and girls’ teams were represented at the meet. The highlight of the afternoon was the BHS girls’ 4X800-meter relay team grabbing a first place finish. The team was comprised of Kristin Humphries, Jacklyn Jensen, Jennifer Hamvas and Erin Reilly. For the boy’s team, David Taranto had the best result of the afternoon, taking fourth place in the 1-mile run. Joe Hoffman also had a strong showing, finishing fifth in the shot put.

Girls Hockey
It was senior night at the Ice Palace for the Burlington High girls’ hockey team, as they honored their lone seniors Ashley Brouillette and Alex Sorrentino. The visiting Reading Rockets were not sympathetic to the ceremonies, however, as they knocked off BHS 4-2. After falling behind 4-0, the Red Devils tried to mount a third period comeback, getting goals from Krista Toscano and Holly Brouillette, but the comeback bid would fall short there.
Boys Hockey
The Burlington boys’ hockey team had been on a roll recently, specifically at home, and came into their Saturday night showdown with Middlesex League leader Reading rolling after disposing of Winchester 7-1. The Rockets proved why they are number one in the league and garnering serious Super 8 consideration, however, beating the home side by a 3-1 score.
Girls Basketball
The Burlington High girls’ basketball team was on the road Thursday night in search of their first win of the season, but were throttled by the home Spartans, losing by a score of 46-24. The lone bright spots for the Lady Devils were Erin Clark, who led the team with nine points, and Katie Han who chipped in six points. The loss drops BHS to 0-11 on the season.
Boys Basketball
Contrary to the girls, the Burlington High boys’ hoops team has been on a roll as of late as they push for the top spot in the Middlesex League. They followed the girls’ game by knocking off Stoneham 69-54, improving to 9-4 in Middlesex League play and 9-5 overall. The Red Devils were led by a few big performances. Ryan Putney scored a game-high 20 points, Greg Sheridan and Mark Melanson each added 14 points, and freshman Shane Farley has his best game of the year scoring 12 points in the win.
Gymnastics
The Burlington High gymnastics team knocked off Woburn Thursday night by a final score of 125.55-120.55. The Red Devils swept the bars with Haley Vercollone taking first, Amber Speck taking second and Casey Landry coming in third. BHS also had a strong showing on the balance beam with Cara DiPerna taking first place and Casey Landry finishing in second. Head coach Katey Sullivan noted it wasn't the Red Devils best performance despite taking the win. "We didn't have our best performance last night. We had a few girl's out due to illness and injury. On a positive note we finished out the season second in the Middlesex league."
