A look back at the week that was in Burlington High School athletics.
The end of the 2010-2011 winter athletics season is nearing and many of the teams are making late season pushes to qualify for the MIAA state tournament. A number of teams were in search of a post-season birth this past week so let’s take a look back at some results.
Puck
The boys’ and girls’ hockey teams both had busy weeks as the boys are within striking distance of a spot in the playoffs while the girls are trying to end their season on a positive note.

The BHS boys’ team had a tough week, facing off against two Middlesex League opponents and going a disappointing 0-2. Saturday night the Red Devils were on the road for a rematch with Belmont High School, whom they routed on home ice earlier in the season. The Marauders had revenge on their minds and were able to exact it, taking a 4-3 decision over Burlington. Wednesday night the to take on the number two team in the Middlesex League, and came close to pulling off the upset. The Red Devils fell by a score of 3-2, with Woburn scoring the game winner late in the third period. Both of the Red Devil goals came off the stick of Trevor Cimino. The losses drop Burlington to 7-6-1 overall and 6-6 in league play.
The Lady Red Devils were in action three times this past week, going 1-2. They started things off on the right foot getting a 6-1road victory over Belmont High School. However, after a strong game Saturday night, the girls were faced with two of the top three teams in the Middlesex League. Monday they were at Stoneham, and the #3 Spartans sent BHS home with a 6-2 loss. Wednesday night they welcomed perennial Massachusetts powerhouse Woburn High School into the Ice Palace and fell to the Tanners 7-0. The 1-2 week improved the girls’ record to 3-13 overall.

Hoops
The Burlington High School boy’s basketball team was only in action for one game this past week as they were at . After clinching a spot in the playoffs with a win over Stoneham last week, the Red Devils seemed to be a bit relaxed as they were manhandled by a strong Tanner squad Tuesday night, falling by a score of 72-55. BHS was led in scoring by senior standout Ryan Putney who recorded 16 points on the night.
The Lady Red Devils were also hosts to Woburn High School Tuesday night, and still in search of their first win of the season. The girls’ put forth one of their best efforts of the season, nearly getting that elusive first win, but ultimately fell short, losing by a score of 47-36.
Girls Indoor Track
The Burlington High girls’ indoor track team took on league powerhouse Lexington High School Wednesday afternoon and was knocked off by the Minutemen by 57-29 decision. The highlight of the meet for the Red Devils was a strong showing in shot put that saw BHS sweep the event with Ashley Steadman coming in first.
Girls Gymnastics
The Lady Red Devils have had a fantastic season, and were rewarded for their hard work as they found out they will be the lone representative from the Middlesex League at the Sectionals, which will be held on February 19th in Hudson. They also found out that a few girls qualified for the State Individuals which will be held this coming Sunday. Haley Vercollone will compete on the bars, Alyssa Mitchell and Cara DiPerna will both compete on the balance beam and Casey Landry will compete on the floor.
