Around the Burlington High School sports world
A look back at the week that was in Burlington High School athletics.
The playoff push is on for the majority of the BHS winter sports teams as their regular seasons continue to wind down. Let’s take a look back at the results from this past week.
Boys Hockey
After tying Middlesex League power Wakefield Saturday night on the road, the Red Devils traveled to Stoneham and dismantled the Spartans in convincing fashion. The two points from the win left Burlington just two more points away from clinching a spot in the MIAA division one tournament.

While the Burlington High School girls’ hockey team will not be participating in the state tournament this year, they continue to play hard with the hopes of spoiling some of their league rivals hopes of a tourney bid. This was the case as the Lady Devils traveled to Winchester Wednesday night, with the Sachems needing just one more win to punch their ticket. They did so, knocking Burlington off by a score of 6-1.
Girls Gymnastics
The girls’ gymnastics squad had a strong performance at the Middlesex League Meet a week ago, placing second behind Melrose with a final score of 137.15. The highlights of the meet for the Red Devils were Haley Vercollone placing third in the All Around competition, Cara DiPerna taking second on the beam and Casey Landrey finishing third in the Floor competition. They also found out that they have qualified for the State Meet, being held in Hudson this weekend.
Girls Basketball
The Lady Red Devils hoops team remained winless on the season as they fell to Winchester on the road Tuesday night, 43-28.
Boys Basketball
The Burlington High School boys’ basketball team had enjoyed a four-game winning streak going into a Friday night affair with Wakefield High School. A 60-50 loss to the Warriors snapped that, however, and the Red Devils fell for the second consecutive time at Winchester Tuesday night. The Sachems knocked Burlington off by a score of 53-47, dropping BHS’ record to 10-8.
