Around the Burlington Sports World

A look back at the week that was in Burlington High School athletics.

It’s been a long 2011-spring high school season, as the teams have had to battle what seemed like endless bad weather just to get their games in. As the regular season for most of the teams comes to an end this week, some of the teams prepare to compete in the MIAA state tournament while others take the time to celebrate their seniors and say their goodbyes. Let’s take a look back at some of the results from this past week.

Baseball

It was a strong week for the baseball team as they looked to gain some momentum going into the MIAA state tournament. They dropped a close game to state powerhouse Lexington on Monday, 5-1, in a game that saw the Red Devils play the Minutemen to a tie through four innings. They bounced back from there, though, taking out Wakefield 7-4 on Tuesday and Concord-Carlisle 10-9 on Wednesday. BHS finished their regular season with a 13-7 record as they prepare for the state tournament.

Softball

It’s been a pretty amazing season in 2011 for the BHS softball team, as they’ve proven themselves to be one of the top teams in the state. They continued their winning ways this past week, as they closed out the regular season with a 3-0 week. They knocked off Lexington on Monday by a score of 8-2. They followed that up with a 4-1 win over Malden, and closed things out with an 11-5 win over Wakefield. The win over the Warriors clinched the Middlesex League title for the Lady Devils.
