BURLINGTON, MA — Next week will see the soft opening of a new specialized bakery in Burlington. Nothing Bundt Cakes is a national chain with over 400 locations, many in Texas and California, but little presence in New England. The Burlington franchise, which has its soft opening Dec. 21, will be just the fourth in the region. The bakery will be located in the Wayside Shopping Center.

The chain sells four sizes of bundt, bite-sized "bundtinis" sold by the dozen, single-serving "bundtlets", and 8- and 10-inch cakes. They have multiple flavors of cake, such as chocolate, carrot and confetti, but just one frosting, cream cheese. Prices range from $4.95 for a single "bundlet" to over $40 for specially decorated cakes. They also have gluten-free options.

The Burlington franchise's owners, Chris and Cindy Nguyen, had been fans of the cakes since they first tried them as high school students in Houston, Chris Nguyen said. They always wanted to open a bakery, but had to wait.

"We were in high school. We didn't have money. It was just a dream," Nguyen said. "We got college degrees, and we did the corporate life. Then we were like, we still want to do this."

The chain were looking to expand in New England, and the Nguyens wanted somewhere with good schools for their 2-year-old son, Nguyen said.

"Massachusetts is known for education," he said. "We love Houston, but it's not the most glamorous city."

The company granted the Nguyens a franchise, and gave them a rigorous training in baking. The family moved to the area four months ago. According to Nguyen, after the soft opening next Dec. 21, the grand opening will be some time in January.
