Burlington Boys Soccer Falls to Melrose 3-1

Frantzdy Pierrot scored twice for Melrose while Derek Skinner scored the Red Devils lone goal.

The soccer team took to Varsity Field on Thursday night in search of its first win of the season, and they are still looking for it after falling to Melrose 3-1.

Melrose sophomore Frantzdy Pierrot scored twice for the Red Raiders, who picked up their second win of the season.

Pierrot got the action started about 11 minutes into play when he scored his first goal of the game to put Melrose up 1-0. The goal came off a corner kick where he headed the ball past Burlington goalie Joe Renaud.

Burlington had a few chances to tie the game in the next few minutes but could not get the ball past Melrose goalie Zeke Vainer. Vainer stopped the first chance when he made a diving stop off the foot Burlington captain Derek Skinner. The Red Devils next chance came about five minutes later when they had back-to-back corner kicks but could not do anything with the opportunity.

In the waning minutes of the first half Melrose looked to add another goal when Michel Pierre-Giles lofted a shot over the head of Renaud but it bounced off the post and Burlington managed to go into halftime down just one goal.

That changed about nine minutes into the second half when Melrose once again got on the board as Pierre-Giles would not be denied a second time. He showed great athleticism as he took the ball from a Burlington defender and dribbled around before shooting the ball past Renaud to make it 2-0 Melrose.

The two goal lead was short lived as Skinner scored for the Red Devils just three minutes later to make it a game once again. His goal came off a Burlington corner kick where he collected the ball and fired it past Vainer to cut the Melrose lead to just a goal.

Burlington nearly tied the game five minutes later off a beautiful free kick but the shot went just wide of the net.

It was a back and forth game the rest of the way until Pierrot scored his second goal of the game with about two minutes left in the game to put it on ice for Melrose.

Renaud finished the contest with nine saves for Burlington while Vainer made five saves for Melrose. Burlington fell to 0-3 on the year while Melrose improved to 2-1. Burlington will try to get the elusive first win on Tuesday night when they travel to Stoneham.
