'Burlington Breaks Ground On Dog Park'

The idea of a dog park has been in the works since February of 2014 when a group of dog owners approached the Parks and Recreation Dept.

From Burlington Parks & Rec: The Burlington Parks and Recreation Department recently held a ground breaking for their new dog park. Director of Parks and Recreation, Brendan Egan and members of the Burlington Dog Park Committee and Friends of the Burlington Dog Park attended the November 18 ceremony at Rahanis Park.

The idea of a dog park has been in the works since February of 2014 when a group of dog owners approached the Parks and Recreation Department about exploring the idea. A committee was formed and began working on developing plans for the park. Dog Park Committee member Katherine Leary shared her thoughts on the work of the Committee, “We share a desire, alongwith others in the town to create a safe place for dogs to run off-leash and interact with other dogs in a safe place.” The Committee was dedicated to seeing a dog park built in Burlington and worked tirelessly on the project.

The park is being funded through a grant from the Stanton Foundation and donations from the
Friends of the Burlington Dog Park. The Stanton Foundation is a private foundation, created by
Frank Stanton, longtime President of CBS. It has as one of its missions, promoting the welfare of
dogs and encouraging the dog-human bond. “This park is an accomplishment the whole town of
Burlington will benefit from. Finally, dog owners will have a safe and friendly place for their dogs to play” commented Chuck Scioli, with the Friends of Group.

The approximately 18,000 square foot park will be located in a flat, open area of Rahanis Park and will be enclosed with a six foot fence, with sections designated for large and small dogs. The interior of the park will consist of a secure entrance area, accessible walkway, benches, K9 turf area, landscaping and irrigation. The exterior of the park will consist of an accessible path from the parking area off Mill Street, landscaping, kiosk with appropriate signage and the current athletic fields and bathroom facilities. The park is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2018 and there will be an official Opening Ceremony at that time.
