BURLINGTON, MA — The Burlington Town Clerk's office has revealed details about the Town Shred Day that will take place next month.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon — or until the truck is full — on Saturday, June 17, in the back parking lot at Town Hall, located at 29 Center St.

Shredding is for residents only, and participants will be forced to show their ID. Participants also will be limited to two boxes of materials to shred.

The Town Clerk's office also said that shredding documents is important for a few main reasons: as protection against identity theft, to create more storage space and prevent fire hazards at home, and to help the environment by lessening the number of trees that are cut down.

All documents will be securely handled during Burlington Town Shred Day, according to the Town Clerk's office.

"Witnessing the shredding of your private records is the only way to guarantee security and give you peace of mind," the Town Clerk's office said in a statement. "Our vendor sends one of their paper destruction trucks to Town Hall. You can deposit your documents in one of the bins. Next, the bin is lifted into the truck and your documents are emptied directly into the shredder. Your files are destroyed beyond recognition."

The statement continued: "You can even go to the truck with our technician and watch while your documents are being shredded on a viewing screen on the side of the truck."
