Burlington Water Rates Going Up 4 Percent
Despite the increase, officials say Burlington water rates are far cheaper than those in neighboring communities.
BURLINGTON, MA — Selectmen approved a 4 percent increase in Burlington water and sewer rates, effective July 1. The average Burlington residential property owner will see their water bill go up by about $16, according to Department of Public Works Director John Sanchez. The rate increase is based on an assessment from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority.
"If we do not raise sewer rates now, then we would have to pay more per year than we collect from rates," Sanchez told selectmen. Despite the increase, Burlington has far more affordable rates than other area towns, Sanchez said.
The new residential rate for 1,000 gallons will be $41.10, up from $39.52 this year. The rate will increase to $42.74 in 2021. The commercial rate for 1,000 gallons will be $20.55, up from $19.76 this year. The rates will increase to $21.37 in 2021.
