Burlington Will Reconsider Plastic Bag Ban

Town Meeting will reconsider the measure it rejected this year in January.

BURLINGTON, MA -- Burlington's representative town meeting will reconsider a ban on single-use, plastic shopping bags that it rejected earlier this year. The warrant article, which was first proposed by a Burlington High School student, was indefinitely delayed when Town Meeting met in September.

More than 80 Massachusetts communities have passed bans on plastic bags that have been a staple of grocery store checkout lines and takeout food orders for decades. The bans typically fine stores that continue to give out plastic shopping bags, and typically include an exemption for plastic bags used to transport perishable items.

While town meeting generally supported the measure in September, they held off on passing it because they believed the Massachusetts legislature was on the verge of passing a statewide ban on plastic shopping bags. Town Meeting is scheduled for Jan. 28.
