Burlington Youth Lacrosse set to add girls teams for 2012 season

Girls in Burlington will have the opportunity to play on their own team starting in March.

Lacrosse may be America’s fastest-growing sport and it continues to expand locally as this year Burlington Youth Lacrosse will be starting a girls program.

The Burlington Youth Lacrosse program was started nine years ago and is designed to teach kids the sport and make it as fun as possible for everyone involved. For both girls and boys there are four different youth teams, U9, U11, U13 and U15.

The U9 team is coed as both boys and girls can begin to learn the game together for the fee of $135. U11, U13 and U15 are split into both boys and girls teams and the fee to play on one of these squads is $165. These fees cover US Lacrosse Membership, a game jersey, game shorts, team equipment (nets, balls, practice jerseys, etc), jamboree entrance fee, referee fees and all league fees.

The season will begin in the middle of March with a few weeks of practices before games begin in April and the season will go until the second weekend of June. There are games every Sunday with a few practices during the week.
Players can register at www.burlingtonlax.com but do so soon because the deadline for the spring 2012 season is Dec. 1. Teams have to be registered early because rosters need to be submitted to the Mass Bay Youth Lacrosse League so they have enough time to set up the schedules. People are encouraged to register as soon as possible so that they are not placed on a waiting list.

The teams practice at Brush Field at the Marshal Simonds Middle School and home games are played at either Brush Field or Varsity Field at Burlington High School.

Burlington Youth Lacrosse president Tanya Ikier is thrilled about the program expanding to give girls the opportunity to play the exciting sport.

“We are really excited to get it going.” Ikier said. “A lot of girls wanted to do it and thanks to the help of a lot of volunteers we now have the info structure to support a girls program. Lacrosse is definitely spreading so it is great that we now can give girls the opportunity to play.”
