Election Update: Voter Turn-Out Slow

At around 4 p.m. this afternoon the number of voter who cast ballots was 1,000 less than same time last year

Supporters for the different candidates lined the high school driveway this afternoon at the 2011 Burlington Town Election that features a three-way race for Board of Selectmen among candidates Daniel Grattan, Michael Runyan and Virginia Mooney. Voter turnout, however, was lower than in previous years.

"Voter turnout today has been dissapointing," said election official Mary Whalen. "Maybe it's due to the wonderful weather we are having."

Whalen said that at about 4 p.m. roughly 1,900 residents had cast ballots in the election. Last year at this time, she added, around 2,900 had been to the polls.

There is still time for voters to participate in the election. The polls, located at the at 123 Cambridge St., will be open to 8 p.m.

Supporters of the different candidates are still hopefull more people will show up to cast ballots. One predicted the conclusion of the Red Sox game, which ended this afternoon with the Sox losing to the Yankees 9 - 4, will free people up to head to the polls. Another thought the end of Saturday Mass will also lead to an influx of voters.
