Spotlight on Early Burlington School Houses

A Brief History of The Areas Historic One Room Schoolhouses

Of the 4 Schoolhouses built in 1794, only the West School and the North School (now a private home) are still standing. In 1964, the Burlington Historical Society was created when a group of dedicated local residents saved the West School from demolition (it had been used as a garage). The West School today is a component of Burlington's Museum Complex and is under the careful care of the Burlington Historical Commission. It is Open to the public and various school groups on many occasions, especially Halloween. The South School once stood in the Burlington Mall area and was consumed by fire in the late 20th Century. The East School was located on Mountain Rd. until demolished in recent years. The North School still stands on the corner of Chestnut Ave. and Wilmington Rd. and is used as a private home. All the 1794 one room Schoolhouses were closed when the Union School was opened in 1898. ( now Burlington's Police Station )
