Hustle, Speed, and Transition: the Red Devils Blueprint of a Winning Season

A look at the strategies of the upcoming Burlington High School Boy's Basketball season.

Hard work and hustle will never be in question when talking about Coach Tom Lyon's .

Slashing guards looking for the extra pass, a full court press designed to open up the fast break and a willingness to hit the post with anyone — all will be on display throughout an exciting new season. Senior guard play will be the key when Burlington hits the floor next, as they look to build on last year's lessons.

Recently, the Devils played host to Austin Prep in a scrimmage game that showcased the speed and tenacity that the renewed squad has to offer its competition this year. Using a three line rotation, Lyons was able to coach to a dominant performance on every level against a team which was almost level in the Massey rankings.

The kick out three was worked to perfection by Senior guard Steve Xu, who seemed to be involved in almost every bucket of the first half of play. He expertly switched hands and drove the lane despite a constant double team at the key. This not only got his teammates open shots but it also helped to establish the low post for the front court to box out the Cougars for easy rebounds and well deserved put backs.

When the second line rotated in, Greg Sheridan took over right where Xu left off. Running his guard ragged off the block he was able to hit his stroke from outside the arch, in a manner that could only be described as Ray Allen-esque. Sheridan was able to also lead the back-court to three straight steals off the press which led to three assists for Sheridan and a double-digit second half lead, stretched out from their impressive first half.

Though the Red Devils were able to run a similarly ranked team all around the court, they will have some early season matchups that will test the endurance that will be their biggest strength this year. Within the first month of the season, they will run the gauntlet against Watertown, Reading Memorial, and Belmont High School, and only in the Watertown matchup will they have the luxury of playing on their home court.

Most of the players polled seemed to feel comfortable with the matchups because they had never seen such a positive buzz surrounding the basketball team. The support will definitely be present, but it will all land on the shoulders of the players to ride the wave of emotion the students will be radiating. Regardless of score, the outcome that will be a guarantee is that the Red Devils will leave everything they have on the floor every night.
