Massachusetts Sales Tax Holiday This Weekend

Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14 set for tax exemption weekend.

The weekend of Aug 13-14 is officially a holiday weekend for shoppers looking for a deal.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick signed a bill last week creating another sales tax holiday in Massachusetts in hopes to boost sales during a slow time of year.

The tax holiday will shelve the 6.25 percent levy on most items selling for less than $2,500. It does not apply to telecommunications or tobacco products as well as gas, steam, electricity, motor vehicles, motorboats, or meals.

According to the Boston Herald, since 2004, the Legislature has approved a two-day tax holiday every year except 2009, saving shoppers a total of $93 million.

Representative Charley Murphy, D-Burlington, said in a release he was happy the tax free weekend will happen this year.

“I think most would agree that this is something which benefits consumers and helps stimulate the local economy,” said Murphy, the House Majority Whip.  “People plan major purchases around the sales tax holiday and obviously enjoy the savings.  Local businesses certainly appreciate the uptick during what is typically a slower sales season for them.”
