Red Devils Stage Dramatic Comeback, Fall in Extras
Third seeded Burlington baseball erased a late 4-1 deficit before losing in the eighth inning to upstart Wayland.
Third-seeded Burlington High School stunned upstart Wayland with a dramatic comeback late in Thursday's preliminary round playoff game. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, the Warriors' shock didn't last too long.
Burlington scored three runs in the final two innings, including a home run by Chris Sharpe to lead off the home half of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4.
Despite the heroics, No. 14 Wayland bounced back in extras to upset the Red Devils with a 5-4 victory in eight innings on Thursday in Burlington.

After Sharpe's mammoth blast with his team three outs from defeat, it appeared the locals were back on track and poised to advance. Burlington loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning, but were unable to push home the walk off run.
Then in the eighth, Wayland scored when a single found its way past a pair of Burlington's outfielders, allowing a runner to scamper home all the way from first base.

Following the loss, Burlington's season came to an end with a record of 14-5 on the year. Wayland will look to continue its unexpected run with a quarterfinal match up against Beverly or Belmont.
"We got our homefield advantage like we wanted to," said head coach Chris Nance. "We just didn't take advantage of it."
