'Sean Collier Bill' for Campus Officers Reintroduced

Under the benefits program, financial assistance is given to police officers, firefighters and EMTs severely injured in the line of duty.

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Campus police officers would be added to the Department of Justice's Public Safety Officer benefits program in a bill reintroduced Thursday.

U.S. Representative Michael Capuano reintroduced the "Officer Sean Collier Campus Police Recognition Act of 2016" in memory of the MIT officer killed in the days following the Boston Marathon bombing.

Under the benefits program, financial assistance is given to police officers, firefighters and EMTs who are catastrophically injured in the line of duty. The benefits for those in the program who are killed goes to eligible family members.

The legislation, co-sponsored by the Massachusetts House Congressional delegation, would be retroactive to April 15, 2013 - the date of the Boston Marathon bombing.
