January is Poverty Awareness Month

Live in solidarity with the poor.

Join U.S. Bishops, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, and the Catholic Community in the United States in taking up Pope Francis’ challenge to live in solidarity with the poor.

Catholics are always called upon to join in solidarity and address the root causes and victims of poverty. Fleeing from their homes in epic numbers, migrants are among the greatest in need in 2016. Their countries are stricken with terrible violence, abysmal unemployment, and unstable government. Taking flight for refuge or prosperity may be their only choice, but the road is perilous. Groups like Catholics Confront Global Poverty encourage us to urge Congress toward comprehensive immigration reform, which:

Provides a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and preserves family unity;
Addresses the root causes of migration by improving U.S. trade, security and development policies in countries where most immigrants come from; and Ensures collaboration among governments to improve the economic and social conditions that compel people to migrate, and recognition of U.S. demand for migrant workers.
