Energy Committee Challenges Middle Schoolers to Conserve

A new program will see how much McCarthy and Parker can cut down on electric, water, and gas consumption.

The School Committee last night approved a competition sponsored by the Energy Conservation Committee to see just how "green" the middle schools can go.

Committee members said it will be a "fun challenge" to win a green cup. The committee will measure gas, electric and water consuption and see who can cut the must usage. The school who cuts the most will win the green cup.

The Energy Committee will be judging the contest, providing data on energy performance and letting each schools know how it is going.

The committee will determine the winner by taking into account 40 percent of the gas usage, 40 percent of the electricity usage and 10 percent of the water usage. The other 10 percent will be judged by innovative ideas the students can come up with that are "above and beyond" to go green.

The contest - which is mainly for fun and bragging rights, the committee said - told the committee it is looking for staff and principal involvement to get off the ground.
