5. The 2010 Ben Affleck crime drama The Town romanticized Boston-based bank robbers. While that story may be fictitious, Eastern Massachusetts, over the years, has produced some of the most cunning bank robbers the nation has ever faced. On Jan. 17, 1950, 11 men wearing rubber Halloween masks and blue chauffeur hats walked into a Brinks Armored Car depot in Boston, and walked out with $2.7 million — the largest bank robbery in American history up to that point. The last man involved was arrested in January 1956, just days before the statute of limitations ran out on the crime, but the vast majority of the $2.7 million was never recovered.
