Baroque Music of Poland, Concert in Carlisle Oct. 15

A young European Baroque orchestra, Il Giardino d'Amore, will perform with Cambridge Concentus, in a program of rare Polish music

On Thursday, October 15, the Cambridge Society for Early Music (CSEM) will present a most unusual concert of Baroque from Poland: “The Crown of the Kingdom of Poland: 250 Years of Polish Music, 1500-1750.” Stefan Plewniak, a lively young Polish violinist from Vienna, is bringing his Baroque orchestra, Il Giardino d’Amore, to the Boston area for this concert. Joining the Europeans will be Cambridge Concentus, for a total of 15 musicians: strings, lute, guitar, harpsichord, trumpets, and a 4-voice choir. Polish early music is virtually terra incognita in the USA, and Stefan Plewniak will be a charming and informative guide to help us explore this territory. Most of the music will be instrumental works from the 17th century, a varied assortment including some German composers (H. I. Biber and J. J. Fux). There will be a dance suite and a solo work for theorbo (bass lute), and music depicting the Siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1683 (the Turks ran away). The climax will be two pieces of the greatest Polish master of the high Baroque, G. G. Gorszycki--overflowing with jubilant melodic invention, touched by moments of pathos.
