CC Scholarship Fund Announces Two New Honorees

The following announcement comes from Lucy V. Miller, chairman of the Concord Carlisle Scholarship Fund.

Two Concord-Carlisle Regional High School 2011 graduates are the first recipients of named scholarship funds established independently this year by longtime Concord residents Annabelle Shepherd and Margaret “Bonnie” Soleau through the Concord Carlisle Scholarship Fund.

George Washington University freshman Julia Lesses of Carlisle received the James E. Shepherd Memorial Scholarship. With her interest in law and politics, Lesses is excited about the unique internship opportunities available in the District of Columbia, as well as GW’s “Professors in Practice” program, in which citizens who work in DC take students on field trips to their places of employment.

When Mrs. Shepherd met Lesses in June she told her, “I can think of no more fitting tribute to Jim than to have this scholarship assist young students from this community. He was a trained engineer who loved education. He was always up at the high school tutoring and volunteering in the computer lab.”

Dr. Shepherd held no fewer than 17 patents for his work on radar and electronic systems. In 1987 the Shepherds were named Concord’s Honored Citizens.

The first recipient of the David S. Soleau Memorial Scholarship is Concordian Austin Eifler. This fund honors longtime Concord resident David Soleau (1948-2008), a 1966 CCHS graduate who studied architecture at Yale University and focused his creative talents on architectural design for schools and universities throughout the world. Eifler hopes to follow in David Soleau’s footsteps by studying architecture at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Mrs. Soleau, David’s mother, told Eifler about David’s lifelong passion for the field, and that she “hopes Eifler will experience as much success and pleasure as an architect as David did.”
