Concord-Carlisle Grad Drowns in Kayaking Accident

Samantha Dweck, 24, of Carlisle, was an award-winning track athlete.

Samantha Dweck, a 2009 Concord-Carlisle High School graduate, died Sunday in a kayaking accident in California.

According to the Humbolt County Sheriff’s Office, Dweck, 24, of Carlisle, was in a kayak with a male companion on the Eel River when the kayak flipped over. The man was able to escape, but Dweck got stuck in the kayak and drowned. She was kayaking with a group of 24 people; the sheriff’s office said the swift water prevented them from rescuing her. It was a “tragic” accident, the sheriff’s office said.

Dweck was an award-winning track athlete at Concord-Carlisle. She also ran track at Brown University.

“The Brown Track & Field program is incredibly saddened by the tragic loss of Sam,” said Tim Springfield, director of the university’s track program, in a statement. “She is remembered as a loyal supporter of her teammates with a heart of gold and a great sense of humor. We grieve with her friends, teammates and family.”

Dweck was working at Edible Credits at the time of her death.
