Light Plant Holds Rate Hearing

The is holding a Rate Hearing on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 7:30pm in the Hearing Room at the Town House.  

CMLP is proposing an 8 percent increase in all rate categories effective Jan. 1, 2011.  Approximately half of this increase is due to an increase in power supply costs.  The remaining increase is necessary as CMLP costs are currently exceeding revenues.  The increase, if approved by the Light Board, will result in a modest return of approximately 1.5 percent.  

On Oct. 1, 2009, in order to promote energy conservation, the Light Board established a tiered pricing system for residential electricity use. Residential Tier 1 includes electricity use under 1,400 kilowatthours per month and includes 70 percent of CMLP customers. Tier 1 is billed at the lowest residential rate.  Tier 2 includes kilowatthours per month between 1,400 and 2,200; Tier 3 includes kilowatthours above 2,200 per month. The rates for use within Tiers 2 and 3 are progressively higher than the rate for Tier 1. For the Jan. 1, 2011 rate, the Light Board is proposing to increase the spread between the residential tier prices, further emphasizing the importance of energy conservation.  The rate increase for Tier 2 electricity usage will be approximately 10 percdent, and the increase for Tier 3 usage will be about 12.5 percent.
