📰 News we're reading
1. Cultural Council offering grants for arts, humanities, science events (concordbridge.org) — Concord residents and organizations can now apply for Cultural Council grants of $200 to $800 to support local arts, humanities, and science programs benefiting the community. Preference goes to applicants who live or work in Concord, and funded events must run by the end of 2027. Applications are online only and due October 15, giving you a short window to polish your idea.

2. West Nile risk level raised after tests in nearby towns (concordbridge.org) — Concord's West Nile virus risk level has been raised to "moderate" after infected mosquitoes were found in neighboring towns like Acton, Carlisle, Maynard, and Sudbury, though Concord samples were negative as of late August. Local and state health officials urge residents to use insect repellent, cover up at dawn and dusk, and stay alert to symptoms. Experts speaking at the Concord Free Public Library stressed the virus is active in our region.

3. Who opens at No. 1 in the Globe Top 20 girls' soccer poll? Look to Division 3. (bostonglobe.com) — Concord-Carlisle's girls' soccer team opens the season ranked No. 4 in the Boston Globe's Top 20 poll, putting the local squad among the state's elite. The rankings also spotlight other strong programs they may face, setting expectations for a highly competitive fall campaign.

4. Photos: Many years, many ears (concordbridge.org) — Verrill Farm's pre-dawn corn picking session drew about 20 enthusiasts, including several Concord families, to learn harvesting tips from longtime farmer Steve Verrill. Under a glowing moon, visitors fanned out through the fields, filled bushels with fresh ears, and heard why Verrill swears by a two-minute boil. The annual August event helps kick off a corn season that can stretch into October.

5. Governor's Council incumbents sweep primary challenges (wbur.org) — Concord's own Mara Dolan easily won re-election in the Democratic primary for Governor's Council District 3, carrying every precinct except her opponent's hometown of Wellesley. Her victory helps ensure the council's current approach to judicial and clemency appointments will continue, while most other incumbents across Massachusetts also fended off challengers. Only two council races will feature Republican opponents in November.
