📰 News we're reading

1. A Concord man believes he's a victim of government tyranny. Town Hall says he's the tyrant. (bostonglobe.com) — A long-running fight over public access to Estabrook Trail has pitted Concord landowners, dog walkers, and town officials against each other, with courts repeatedly siding with the town's right-of-way. Even after losing in the state's highest court, one Estabrook Road homeowner continues pushing back with no-trespass letters, signs, and confrontations that are reshaping how Concord residents use this once-beloved walking area.

2. Woods Hill Table Salmonella Outbreak: Ten Sick, Staff and Customers Among Them, as Concord Restaurant Closes. What Investigators Have Not Yet Said. (lexblog.com) — Woods Hill Table in West Concord is temporarily closed after ten people, including staff and customers, were sickened in a Salmonella cluster now under investigation by Concord and state health officials. The health director says there's currently no ongoing public risk, but more testing is underway, and anyone who ate there in September and feels ill is urged to seek testing and contact Concord Public Health.

3. Wood Partners Breaks Ground on Alta Thoreau in Concord, Massachusetts (multifamilyaffordablehousing.com) — A major 237-unit Alta Thoreau apartment community is now under construction in Concord, bringing one-, two-, and three-bedroom units plus extensive amenities and 25% designated affordable housing. Designed to Passive House standards with all-electric power and porous pavement, the project is slated for completion in February 2028 and will significantly expand local housing options.

4. New prison reuse plan could double retail, trim parking (concordbridge.org) — Concord officials and consultants are floating new plans to redevelop the MCI-Concord prison site, potentially doubling retail space to about 100,000 square feet while trimming parking and reserving land for Public Works. With traffic changes, up to 1,000 housing units, and an expected Town Meeting zoning vote in May, residents' decisions will shape taxes, traffic, and future shopping and housing options.

5. Concord's second revolution (engelsbergideas.com) — Concord's role in American history goes beyond the 1775 battle, as writers and reformers like Emerson, Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, George Ripley, and Bronson Alcott turned the town into a hub of Transcendentalist thought and social activism. Their work around Walden Pond, local anti-slavery organizing, experimental schools, and utopian communities still shapes how Concord residents see nature, education, and civic responsibility today.
