On Friday, law makers in both the House and Senate decided to postpone action on two measures that inspired widespread protests last week and brought some popular Internet sites to a grinding halt.

The measures in question: SOPA and PIPA, both of which would grant the Justice Department authority to make websites remove links that contain any potential copyright infringement, or in some cases, temporarily shut sites down due to suspected infringement. In protest last week, Google displayed a black bar over its name, and Wikipedia went through a 24-hour blackout period.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), sponsor of SOPA — Stop Online Piracy Act — announced Friday he would confer with copyright holders and Internet service providers to come up with a new approach. Similarly on Friday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) said he would hold off on a vote regarding PIPA — Protect Intellectual Property Act.

While Youtube, free television and information sites, and file sharing servers are off the chopping block for now, Internet policing acts are sure to pop up again. So what does this mean to Concordians?

Concord is brimming with creativity, and boasts a vibrant community of writers, musicians, painters, and a plethora of other artists. How do you feel about SOPA, PIPA, or some other such law in the foreseeable future?
