Verrill Farm Hosts Barbecue

Annual event adds new twist: farm equipment demos, fun activities.

Verrill Farm harvests the last, lazy days of summer with its annual barbecue the Sunday after Labor Day. The  Sept. 12 event includes a traditional barbecue and, for the first time, farm demonstrations of equipment and practices used at Verrill Farm to grow the fresh, flavorful crops available at the stand and used by chefs at more than 40 restaurants in Greater Boston. Farm Day and Barbecue hours are noon - 4 p.m.  For information, call 978.369.4494 or visit www.verrillfarm.com.

"Consumers are interested in buying local and increasingly have questions about how our crops are grown," says Steve Verrill, adding, "September's Farm Day demonstrations will provide a glimpse at what it takes to plant, grow and harvest over 40 crops, often several varieties of each, on more than 150 acres here at the farm."

There will be several demonstrations of equipment, including a precise cultivating tractor used in the fields, and of techniques such as plug transplanting, a method used at the farm and by home gardeners as well.

In addition to the demonstrations, there will be live music, activities and food available out side under tents beside the stand.
Food served a la carte:
• Traditional BBQ made in Verrill Farm's own smoker.  Choices include pulled pork, ribs, chicken, cole slaw, beans and more.

  • Desserts and beverages also be available.
  • Baked Potato Bar - with a selection of toppings
Entertainment
  • Music by Boston Road Bluegrass
Activities
  • Old Fashioned games - ring toss and others
  • Hay rides - there is a small fee for these

The month of September yields the largest variety of Verrill Farm home grown crops of the year.  From arugula to zucchini, the stand is packed with produce to take home after the barbecue and the local bounty continues through December with beets, potatoes, and winter squashes among the choices.  The stand also stocks prepared meals to go, baked goods, pies and desserts all made in the farm stand kitchen.
