DANVERS, MA -- All Saints Episcopal Church of the North Shore – with its 12-year history of welcoming AA, NA, OA and Al-Anon groups that hold up to 21 meetings each week at the church
– will host its first Service of Recovery and Healing on Sunday, October 24, at 9:30 AM. The service – in the church sanctuary, on Zoom (Meeting ID: 134 596 872) and on Facebook Live – welcomes everyone, from any denomination or no denomination, with this come-as-you-are service that invites those who struggle with addiction or those whose loved ones may be struggling.

“We welcome beloved children of God who are seeking to find their way to recovery by practicing the Twelve Steps,” says The Rev. Marya DeCarlen, rector of All Saints.

“During our service, we will hear stories of spiritual awakening and healing from the compulsive behaviors that remove freedom from us, including addictions to alcohol, narcotics, food, gambling, sex, and other substance or behavioral addictions.

“Our doors are open, our hearts are open, and our welcome flung wide for all to come together to celebrate hope and pray for peace with and for those seeking a new life of grace with a loving God,” Rev. DeCarlen says.

The Episcopal Church has deep roots in the recovery movement. Its relationship with the 12 Steps to Recovery goes back to 1935, when Episcopal priest, Dr. Samuel Shoemaker, worked with Bill W. and Dr. Bob S. to develop Alcoholics Anonymous. AA became the model for numerous other addiction-recovery programs that are based on the original 12 Steps.

The 12 Steps are based on ancient Christian spiritual guidance designed to help all people turn away from all that holds them captive and to grow into the true freedom for which Christ has set us free.
