Danvers Sets Annual Household Hazardous Waste Day

The drive-thru event will be on Sept. 17 at the Danvers Transfer Station.

DANVERS, MA —Danvers residents will have their annual chance to get rid of household hazardous waste items for free in September.

The town will host a collection on Sept. 17 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Danvers Transfer Station on East Coast Road off Route 1 South. The drive-thru collection is free to all residents, who are asked to put items in their truck bed, SUV hatch or trunk for contactless pickup through contractor Clean Harbors. No collections will be accepted from the passenger section of a vehicle.

Commercial vehicles will not be allowed. Non-town residents can utilize the collection day by paying a fee in advance by contacting ededonato@danversma.gov by Sept. 15. Identification with proof of residency is required.

Accepted items include fertilizers, pesticides, pool chemicals, art supplies, photography chemicals, antifreeze, up to five gallons of waste motor oil, gasoline, household cleaners, drain cleaners, oil-based paints and stains.

Propane tanks, NiCad and Lithium batteries, and fluorescent bulbs will not be accepted. Those can be brought to the transfer station during regular business hours. Alkaline batteries can be disposed of in regular trash pickup.

Electronics can be left curbside with bulk item stickers and collected during Zero Waste Recycling events, but will not be accepted on this day.

Latex paint will also not be accepted. It can be dried out and placed with the lid off in an open bag with curbside trash, or brought to the transfer station during regular business hours.

The transfer station will be closed to normal operations during the household hazardous waste event.

Residents must remain in their vehicles at all times. Those with questions should contact the DPW at 978-777-0001 x3011.
