Mac D'Alessandro, who is running against incumbent Stephen Lynch for the Ninth Congressional seat, popped into Dedham Square this morning to pick up the newspaper. While there he saw firsthand how dangerous the Eastern Avenue intersection at High Street is, as he scurried across to avoid the wrath of a car.

Take A Walk Through History

Looking for something to do? Why not take a lesson in town history? Did you know the Fairbanks House in Dedham is thought to be the oldest standing wood-frame building in North America? If you haven't had the opportunity to tour the home, now is the time. It's open to the public for tours from May through October. Tours are available Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 1-5 p.m. The last daily tour is at 4 p.m.

For the German in Us All

Fall is in the air and Dedham is gearing up for the season with an Oktoberfest from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Endicott Estate.

The third-annual event will include everything from a German food tent, a German Bier and Wine Garten, a dance pavilion, games and  activities for children and live German entertainment. This fall tradition benefits the Katherine Endicott Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving the Endicott Estate.

Admission is $7 per person ages 21 and over, $5 for seniors and those ages 12 to 20. Children 11 and under are free.

Seeking Answers

Making good on a promise, the Board of Selectmen will hear from Perry Makarios, the owner of District Convenience tonight. Selectman Carmen DelloIacono said if the Washington Street store wasn't open by the next meeting, the board would seek answers as to why. The board granted Makarios a liquor license in June, a month after the store closed for renovations.

Hail to the Chief

Town Administrator Bill Keegan will give his recommendation for the next police chief at tonight's selectmen meeting. The new appointee will replace Mike Weir, who officially retired in June, but had been on leave since January. Lt. Michael D'Entremont has been in charge of the day-to-day operations of the department in Weir's absence.
