Blue Bunny Assumes Ownership of Mocha Java

Thursday night, the selectmen granted Peter Reynolds the shop's common victualler license.

DEDHAM, MA — For Mocha Java fans, it’s the same coffee with a different person behind the scenes.

A year since a change in operator, the coffee shop and selectmen made it official Thursday night, with the board granting Blue Bunny owner Peter Reynolds the shop’s common victualler license. Last year, Mocha Java moved from the corner of High Street and Eastern Avenue to Reynold’s children’s bookstore. So far, the move has been a success.

“Turns out books and coffee are a good combo,” Reynolds told the selectmen Thursday night.

Reynolds came into the picture last year when Mocha Java owner Steve Carlson lost his lease and had to move to Seattle to take care of his father. Reynolds offered to give Carlson a spot inside his store. Eventually, Carlson asked Reynolds to take over full time.

“It’s really worked out well. We’re making the transition official tonight. We’re excited to keep Mocha Java going and we’re looking forward to making some improvements in the future and this is the first step,” Reynolds said.

Since the move, a bakery case has been added and seating has been approved. There are thoughts about doing some cooking down the road.

Mocha Java and the Blue Bunny are located on High Street in Dedham Square.
