Dedham Artists Flourishing in New Square Home

More than 20 local artists have filled their Square store and are readying for the busy holiday season.

Dedham artists are settling into their new Square home on High Street with the holidays approaching.

The opened its doors in September, and since have filled walls and tables with locally produced pieces of art from metal sculptures to photography to oil paintings.

"You could go to [a big box store] and buy things, but it is mass-produced," said Dedham artist Diana Hampe. "Why not come here insted and get a one-of-a-kind piece?"

Three women banded together to find a pernament home for local artists to display and sell their work - and Kerry Hawkins, a co-founder, said they are looking forward to a successful holiday season. And now other artists have a place to put their work.

"[My paintings] are piling up, so it was a way for me to have a reason for making the paintings that I love to do," Hampe said.

Artists plan to hold classes beginning in 2012, teaching others their craft.

Many of the pieces are inspired by local places - including Wilson Mountain, and spots on Cape Cod.

"To me, you buy something because it speaks to you," said Hampe. "It just makes where you live more appealing, visually."

Most of the 20-plus artists replaces at least one piece of work on a monthly basis, and were juried before joining.

Dedham Square Artist Guild is supported by sales, a membership for patrons and a herd of volunteers.

"A lot of [artists] will do art while their here," Hawkins said.

Nearby businesses in the Square are helping out as well. Often times restaurants and coffee shops have put artwork on their walls that patrons can purchase, Hawkins said.

"Some of the businesses have been great by sending people here," Hawkins said.
