Dedham Baseball Can't Overcome Big Weymouth First Inning
The Dedham High School baseball team lost to Weymouth 13-5 Monday.
It may have been a cold, cloudy day, but that didn’t stop Weymouth from heating up the basepaths this afternoon against Dedham at in a 13-5 Wildcats victory.
Weymouth really set the tone in the first inning. Dedham senior pitcher Dan O’Connor got Weymouth third baseman Stephen Bristol to groundout to start the game. After an error and a single, O’Connor was able to strikeout Weymouth’s cleanup hitter Sam McKay.
But that’s when Weymouth did their damage by playing some old-fashioned small ball. Weymouth first-year coach Jim Dolan set in motion a ferocious running attack, setting his baserunners in motion on nearly every pitch.

“Our goal today was to get some people on base and put some pressure on the fielders by stealing a base and going first to third,” Dolan said. “I think the kids did a good job of that today.”
Even when it looked like they had made a play, things didn’t always seem as they appeared, like one hard hit ball that took a funny hop over first baseman Kevin Boudrow’s head.

When all was said and done, Weymouth had put six runs up on the board before Dedham had even had a chance to bat. It would prove to be too much for the Marauders to overcome.
did score a couple back in their half of the first, but everything else seemed to be a hit here, a hit there. They just couldn’t seem to put a rally together.
Pat Maloney took over pitching duties with two outs in the fourth. He pitched very well over the remainder of the game, and the Marauders seemed to settle down, but the damage had already been done.
“We knew that they had some speed,” third-year Dedham coach Kevin Quaranto said. “You put pressure on teams. We should make the plays. Good teams put pressure on you. Good teams capitalize like they did. We have to be ready for it. But that’s on me. I have to make sure they’re ready to go.”
With the win, Weymouth moves to 2-3 overall, 2-1 in conference. Dedham drops to 4-3, and 1-2 in the Bay State League.
The Marauders will try to regroup on Wednesday at Norwood.
