Dedham School Committee Approves New HS Academic Standars

Students will now have to take four years of math and pass more classes to participate in after school activities.

DEDHAM, MA — Some of the standards are being raised at Dedham High School.

The school committee recently approved three academic changes at the high school. Starting with the Class of 2021, four years instead of three years of math will be required and both levels of college prep courses will use the same GPA scale.

Starting in the fall, all students will be required to pass five classes instead of four to participate in extracurricular activities and athletics. Dedham previously used the MIAA standard of four.

The changes are not expected to have a large impact. Only four seniors did not take match during the 2016-17 school year, down from 12 in 2012-13 and an average of four to seven students per semester will be affected by the change in performance to participate in after school activities.

“I firmly believe if we raise the bar, students will rise to it. I think it’s a motivating factor and I think that students that put in the effort will be able to pass the classes,” Superintendent Michael Welch said.
