Dedham Square Circle Calls For Review Of Dangerous Intersection

Dedham Square Circle Executive Director Amy Haelsen said the intersection of Washington and High streets has a dangerous blind spot.

DEDHAM, MA — A potentially dangerous intersection in Dedham is getting a review before someone gets seriously hurt trying to cross the street.

At the request of Dedham Square Circle Executive Director Amy Haelsen, the selectmen agreed to have Town Engineer Jason Mammone take a look at the intersection of High and Washington streets. Haelsen said the area, specifically a blind spot near the crosswalk from Cafe Bagle to Horses Thieves Tavern, is a safety hazard.

“We have a situation in which people feel unsafe crossing the street. Not a week goes by that I don’t hear from at least a couple of people,” Haelsen said.

The problem lies in a concurrent traffic signal, meaning that vehicles can take a right turn from Washington to High Street while pedestrians have a walk signal across High Street.

“I think it’s one of those situations where it’s not a problem until it’s a problem,” Haelsen said.

Selectman James McDonald said they have received previous complaints about that intersection.

“It means a lot to me to hear you say it’s a problem because when I cross there, it’s tough and I understand why you feel that way,” Chairman Dennis Teehan said.

The board hopes to have an open discussion following Mammone’s review.
