Dedham Students Participate in an Hour of Code
Dedham students were introduced to computer programming through a variety of programs and activities in December.
In December, Dedham students joined over 78,000,000 people around the world in an Hour of Code. In celebration of Computer Science Week (December 8-14), students participated in this movement designed to introduce students to computer programming and show them that anyone can learn the basics to be a maker, creator, and innovator.
Elementary school students used a variety of free activities on their libraries’ websites and iPads to manipulate code, including popular activities involving Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, Frozen, MIT’s Scratch, Kodable and Tynker. All activities were free and many students continue to use these activities at home. Seven high school students joined 72 Avery students on Wednesday, December 10th during recess to work together on programming activities.
Dedham High School had a Flappy golf competition and a trivia contest and gave away prizes donated by SkyZone and Dedham Savings. Speaker Justin Magnan, spoke with students about owning his own company, Magnan Industries. High School students visited Middle School classes and together they worked on coding activities. Exposing students to STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) activities and career opportunities is important so that we may prepare our students for careers in our ever-increasingly technology-based world.
