School Library October Reading Celebrations

Elementary school libraries in Dedham celebrate reading in October.

During the month of October, students at Avery, Greenlodge, Oakdale, and Riverdale participated in a variety of reading programs and celebrations through the school library media centers. The programs and celebrations are designed to foster a love of reading and encourage students to become lifelong readers.

At the Avery School, first grade students celebrated Global Read Aloud 2014 by studying the works of author/illustrator (and Dedham resident) Peter H. Reynolds. Fourth and fifth grade students read The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer Holm during lunches as a part of a new Lunch Bunch program. October brought the start of three new Lunch Bunches - opportunities for students to listen to a story during their lunch time. Second graders began participating in a recess LEGO group. 95 Avery students exercised their bodies and brains by participating in “Fit and Lit.” These students read and exercised throughout the month to earn charms.

Students at the Riverdale School also participated in Global Read Aloud 2014. Students in the 4th and 5th grade participated by enjoying their lunch in the library while they listen to The Fourteenth Goldfish. The first graders participated with an author study of Peter Reynolds. First graders also participated in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign, the largest shared reading experience in the world. During library time, students enjoyed listening to Bunny Cakes by Rosemary Wells. Second graders studied reptiles and amphibians and participated in a Skype visit with author and naturalist, Jennifer Nolan.

Students at the Greenlodge School participated in genre studies of novels, mysteries, folktales, alphabet books, and picture/early readers.

The Oakdale School had a book character pumpkin decorating contest. 65 students and their families decorated and painted pumpkins to look like their favorite book character. October also brought the start of three lunch and recess clubs. The Lunch Bunch book club for 4th and 5th graders started reading Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library and The Survivor Book Club began reading I Survived the Destruction of Pompeii. A LEGOS in the Library Club also started during recess.
