Ursuline Soccer Drops Home Opener to Weston

The Bears fell behind in the 22nd minute and couldn't recover.

A pair of odd-man rushes did in the Ursuline soccer team Tuesday afternoon as the Bears dropped its season open 2-0 to visiting Weston.

Twice a fallen defender led to Weston goals. In the first half it was the Wildcats' Emma Dagres who lifted the ball over the head of Ursuline goalie Alicia McNally, of Dedham, in the 22nd minute to give Weston its lead.

"The first goal was a tough one. We had one of our girls slip at midfield, and they had the advantage," Forte said. "It was a disappointment where we didn't get back on defense."

Early in the second half, the Bears had an opportunity to knot the game on a penalty kick, but Steph Klaubert's shot was stopped.

Twenty-seven minutes into the second half, Weston earned an insurance goal when Nichole Brenna netted a shot from about 10 yards out to the right of McNally.

"She made a nice two-touch, controlled the ball and made a nice shot," Forte said.

The play materialized when an Ursuline defender and Weston attacker both fell to the grass without a whistle.

Several Ursuline players, expecting a whistle, either slowed or stopped playing, Forte said after the match.

"We kind of stopped playing. We thought the whistle blew, and we gave up," Forte said. "The player was unmarked, but I thought she made a nice touch."

Either way the goal counted, and Ursuline found themselves down a pair, and with Weston clamping down on offense, rarely had opportunities to score for the rest of the game.

"We had some good shots in the first half ... we just need to work a little harder on transition," Forte said.

With Boston Latin waiting for Ursuline on Thursday, Forte and his team will work on some things in practice Wednesday.

"That should be a good game for us and hopefully we'll turn it around by then," he said.
