Boston in the Spring

Boston in the springtime is ripe with possibility.

Let’s face it: winters are long and hard in Boston. Weather-wise, they often arrive early—snow can arrive well before Thanksgiving—and linger far later than they should. That said, when spring finally does arrive in Boston, it is glorious. Perhaps it is because it is such a fleeting season, but there’s something so special about springtime in New England, and Boston in particular. Visitors to the city in April or May can rest assured there’s plenty to see and do.

Boston Common

Any visit to the city, in any season, would not be complete without a visit to Boston Common. Known colloquially as “the Common”, it is the nation’s oldest urban park. The Common sits right in the middle of the chic and tourist-friendly Back Bay neighborhood and offers a garden-like oasis right in the middle of it all. Springtime sees the beginning blooms of the botanical gardens, as well as the return of the Swan Boats to the pond. One easily while away an afternoon, admiring the beauty, walking the trails, or relaxing with a book or a picnic.

Fenway Park

Springtime means baseball, and this is possibly no truer anywhere else than in the home of the Boston Red Sox. Boston’s home team plays in historic Fenway Park, also known as “America's Beloved Ballpark.” Even for those who are not rabid baseball fans, nothing matches the excitement of cheering along with the notoriously die-hard Boston fans for their home team. More ardent fans of baseball should consider opting for the guided tour of the stadium to complete the visit.

Indoor Cultural Attractions

Spring in New England can be fickle, so it’s a good idea to have a plan for a rainy, or even snowy, day. Luckily, there’s no shortage of fantastic indoor activities to choose from. In particular, Boston offers a wide variety of museum. Whether one is interested in science, an indoor zoo, or fine art, there’s a museum to visit. For fans of art, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is especially nice in spring, as its center courtyard offers a botanical oasis that can be enjoyed in between the raindrops.

Boston in the springtime is ripe with possibility. A visit to the city at this time of year offers the opportunity to enjoy all that the city has to offer, both indoors and outdoors.
