Loya reportedly later shot officer MacDonald in the back below his bulletproof vest when gunfire broke out. The suspect has been arrested and charged with murder and assaulting a police officer among other charges.
After Bourne Police posted news of the incident, and MacDonald’s injury, on its Facebook page, residents in the area began changing their Facebook profile pictures to the Bourne Police Department’s shield.
The change is meant to show support and gratitude to Bourne police officers.
District Attorney Michael O’Keefe also expressed gratitude to the Bourne Police Department, commending the officers for refraining from shooting at Loya in an area with many occupied homes nearby.
