WFL Book Club – The Martha’s Vineyard Beach and Book Club by Martha Hall Kelly

Artwork by Philip Dutra will be displayed at The Gallery at FCTV from May 4 through May 29. A reception with the artist will be held on Sunday, May 17th, from 3-5pm.
Raised on Cape Cod, Philip Dutra draws on a lifetime of coastal experience to create paintings that emphasize clarity, restraint, and the natural beauty of the sea. Before committing fully to art, he worked in the boating industry, an experience that deepened his understanding of water, movement, and light—elements that now define his work. His background in architectural engineering also informs his sense of structure and composition.
Dutra’s paintings reflect a lifelong connection to the shoreline. Having spent decades immersed in the coastal environment, he finds continual inspiration in its shifting colors and moods. His approach centers on simplifying complex scenes, allowing essential forms and atmosphere to emerge without excess detail.
For Dutra, art is both personal expression and a way to evoke shared memories. He aims to create work that resonates emotionally while maintaining technical discipline. When faced with creative challenges, he steps away, often turning to quiet reflection or movement to regain perspective.
He believes artistic growth comes from persistence, observation, and a willingness to learn through process. The coast remains both his subject and his refuge—a constant source of inspiration that continues to shape his work and vision.
The Gallery at FCTV is located within the Falmouth Community Media Center, which is at 310E Dillingham Ave., easily accessible by Rose Morin Lane. FCTV and Gallery Hours: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu: 10-8pm, Fri: 10am-6pm. Sat: Closed, Sun: 12-8pm.

Yoga with Chelsea, Wednesdays starting May 6, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Chelsea’s class is gentle and appropriate for beginners. At the same time, almost everyone will find challenge in it, since we work with a range of skills: balance, strength, mobility, coordination, mental focus, and the skill of relaxing. Yoga is great at finding those neglected or hurting parts of our bodies and coaxing them into more freedom of movement, ease, and grace.
Classes include brief periods of quiet meditation, movement in and out of yoga poses, movement explorations influenced by various somatic traditions besides yoga, and there is always a period of quiet resting at the end of class, for a chance to enjoy all the benefits. After class, students tend to feel lighter, looser, and more clear-headed and connected.
Please bring a yoga mat if you have one. If you don’t, there will be several to borrow. Other props you might have, such as blocks, are helpful to bring as well.

Cockerell's dazzling, innovative family memoir tells the story of the plan to create a Jewish state in Texas, just one of several plans that spun off of Zionism's focus on Palestine. It's an utterly absorbing read and fascinating chapter of both our country's and Jewish history.
 
On June 7, 1907, a ship packed with Russian Jews set sail for a promised land: not Jerusalem or New York, as many on board had dreamed, but Texas. This was the beginning of the Galveston Plan, which brought to the Gulf Coast ten thousand Jews fleeing the persecution and brutality of the Russian Empire. It was a plan conceived of by Zionists impatient for an alternative to Palestine. Their motto: “If we cannot get the Holy Land, we can make another land holy.” Led in their search for a temporary homeland by the renowned novelist Israel Zangwill and by Rachel Cockerell’s great-grandfather, David Jochelmann, they scoured the Earth before reluctantly settling on Galveston. Zangwill feared the Jewish identity would be lost in the great American melting pot, but he saw no other hope. 
 
Cockerell weaves together diaries, letters, newspaper articles, and interviews in a highly inventive style. Constructed entirely of primary sources, with one flowing into the next, the book lets long-dead voices reanimate, jostle for space, and converge to tell their stories with a novelistic vividness and detail. We follow Zangwill and the Jochelmann family through two world wars and to London, New York, and Jerusalem as their lives intertwine with those of memorable figures of the twentieth century―Theodore Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, and more. Melting Point asks what it means to belong, what can be salvaged from the obscured past, and whether a promised land can ever live up to its promises.</th></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table><table><tbody><tr><td><table><tbody><tr><th><a href="https://www.falmouthjewish.org." rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"></a></th></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table>

Cape Cod Fairgrounds

Come find a bumper crop of unique and hardy plants for your Cape Cod garden, locally grown by members of the MGACC, in the 7,200 square foot Marketplace Barn. As in past years, gardeners will be delighted with the abundant selection of tomato, vegetable and herb plants, along with Cape proven performers in flowering perennials, pollinator-friendly natives, and queen of the autumn garden -- dahlias. 
An expanded variety of hydrangeas--including new introductions, native hybrids, rebloomers and climbers--will be featured in their own tent annexed to the Marketplace Barn, along with spring-blooming native azaleas, mountain laurels and rhododendrons for instant color.
The 27th Annual Plant Sale will open an hour earlier this year to allow garden enthusiasts more time to shop. Master gardener volunteers will be on hand to answer plant and gardening questions, and the community is invited to drop off soil samples from their garden or lawn for free pH testing by the Cooperative Extension’s Horticulture Clinic. Proceeds from the Annual Plant Sale support MGACC community outreach and public education programs across the Cape.

To honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Boston Eastern Heritage Chorus, Waquoit Congregational Church choir, and the John Wesley United Methodist Church choir unite again for the third year in a row to present “Bridge to Harmony 2026”. This chorale concert features popular American, Italian, and Chinese folk art songs. Sea Stars Early Learning Center

Sea Stars Early Learning Center offers a balanced program that incorporates play-based learning, structured lessons, and physical activities. Children are encouraged to explore their interests, whether through music, art, science, or outdoor exploration. There’s a focus on developmental milestones, including fine motor skills, communication, and social interaction. The facility focuses on helping children develop strong social skills through group activities, games, and cooperative learning. There may also be gardening activities. The building is designed with child safety in mind, featuring soft corners, non-toxic materials, and secure fencing around outdoor areas. Access points are monitored and locked to ensure only authorized individuals can enter. There’s a first aid kit and trained staff on hand at all times to handle any emergencies. The classrooms and play areas are spotless, with an abundance of natural light streaming in through large windows. The space is well-organized, with age-appropriate toys, books, and learning materials accessible to children. There’s a cozy reading nook, art stations, and sensory play areas where kids can explore their creativity. Our staff is certified in child development, first aid, and CPR, but they also have a genuine passion for working with children. Melissa Anderson and Leigh-Ellen Ferreira are two Falmouth natives who have spent many years working with children.
