The dramatic scene unfolded on Whitecrest Beach in Wellfleet Sunday morning.

Scores of Cape Cod beachgoers on Sunday made a desperate attempt to save a great white shark that beached itself in Wellfleet.
The scene unfolded on Whitecrest Beach at about 8 a.m. Beachgoers poured water on the mammoth creature and dug a tunnel in an attempt to push it back into the water. Despite those efforts, the shark died.

Researchers recovered the shark and performed a necropsy Monday.
