EEE Found In New Mosquito Sample In Falmouth

Health officials said no additional spraying has been ordered.

FALMOUTH, MA — Another mosquito sample has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis, or EEE, in Falmouth, health officials said. The sample was collected from a trap on Walker Road Sept. 12.

The virus was found in the mammal-biting mosquito Aedes vexans, according to the Board of Health.

A mosquito sample in neighboring Bourne tested positive for EEE Sept. 10. A crew was sent to Bourne last week to treat for mosquitoes in standing water.

There is a heightened risk of EEE until the first hard frost, according to the Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project. Bourne, Falmouth and Truro are considered to be at moderate risk for the virus.

Several mosquito pools in Falmouth tested positive for EEE earlier this summer, prompting the town to spray pesticides to combat its mosquito population. Falmouth health officials said due to the length of time between previous positive samples and the most recent one, no additional spraying has been ordered.
