Ms. McNamara grew up in Boston, where her father served as Police Commissioner for ten years. She has degrees from Mount Holyoke and Simmons Colleges, and is now a librarian at the University of Chicago. These places are threads from the author’s own life which are similar to the characters in her book, even though it is set in Woods Hole in the 1890’s. She features not only her main fictional characters, but also sets them among real historical people, places, and events from those early days at the Marine Biological Laboratory, providing an intriguing step into the past of our own town. The story is also laced with proper contemporaneous behavior, introducing the readers to the manners and mores of the time. In a clever touch, the book designers have used a delightful archival photograph of the early women collectors at MBL on the cover. The book is published by the Allium Press of Chicago.

Ms McNamara has published three books in this historical mystery series, featuring her heroine/detective, Emily Cabot, who has been involved in cases in Chicago’s Hull House and the Pullman Strike of 1894. The author is already working on the next book in the Emily Cabot mystery series, “Death at Chinatown”. When not working or writing she can be found sailing on Lake Michigan. The Woods Hole Librarians hope to get her out sailing here too.
