Despite daily challenges ranging from limited resources to security needs, Israeli creativity and inventiveness help make the world a better place. Israel has made significant advancements in the fields of science, environment, medicine and technology, and has shared these developments with the rest of the world. How did this happen? What underlying growth factors have given rise to this small nation’s triumph over adversity? Israel Inside answers these questions by exploring the positive characteristics of Israeli society from a humanistic, psychological, and emotional perspective. Sidestepping the usual conversation of politics, conflict and violence, it tells the story of the resilient Israeli people and explores the core character strengths – called “actualizers” – that enable Israelis to succeed against incredible odds: the deep-seated values such as education, family, and tikkun olam (responsibility for the world), which directly contribute to Israel’s accomplishments in the economic, technological and humanitarian spheres.  Learn more at www.israelinsidethemovie.com

USA, 2011 (60 minutes) English and Hebrew with English subtitles

Women Unchained chronicles cases of modern-day agunot (Hebrew: chained), women whose husbands refuse to grant them a Jewish divorce, preventing them from re-marrying. Shot in the United States and Israel, Women Unchained includes illuminating interviews with leading women’s rights advocates, rabbis and experts. The film provides helpful historical background on the state of women’s rights in Judaism and details of “get-o-nomics” and the outlandish extortion schemes levied against some women, while offering strategies for what women can do to protect themselves. Women Unchained also makes the case for why this issue, seemingly so removed from the daily life of much of the Jewish community, matters to all Jews.

Door open at 7:00 P.M. Refreshments included in the ticket price. The FJC Summer Series begins on July 10 and takes place on most Tuesday evenings during July and August.
