Greater Falmouth Mostly All-Male Men's Chorus Spring Concert

The Greater Falmouth Mostly All-Male Men’s Chorus will hold its spring concert, “Shooby Doo Wop” on Saturday, June 9 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, June 10, at 3 PM at St. Patrick’s Church, 511 Main Street, in Falmouth.

The concert features lively, upbeat music from the 1950s and ‘60s, songs with fun, nonsensical words and bouncy melodies designed to transport listeners back to a simpler time, such as “Under the Boardwalk,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “In the Still of the Night,” and “Duke of Earl.”

“The selections are really fun,” said Marcia Franklin, president of the chorus. “It really brings you back to another time when the lyrics were goofy—like ‘yip, yip, yip’ and ‘yada, yada.’ It is so much fun to sing this music, and I think audiences will love hearing it again—or for the first time.”

Much of the music from the 1950s and 1960s was originally song by groups, in four-part harmony, said Ms. Lerner. Groups like the Temptations and the Four Tops came into their own. Even Billy Joel sang four-part harmony with himself on “The Longest Time.”

“It was the radical music of the time,” she said, “coming after the era of solo singers. The GFMAMMC sings in four-part men’s harmony, so we are really singing the original arrangements.”

The chorus has added their own touches. The men will perform “16 Tons,” and there will be a special version of “In the Still of the Night.”

The chorus is directed by Brittany Haskell; Megan Anthony will accompany.

Concert tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance from chorus members or at Eight Cousins and Blast From the Past, both on Main Street in Falmouth.
